Psychological help takes many forms. Depending on the kind of difficulty a client is facing, different kinds of support become useful. Whatever the form of the intervention, psychological help rests above all on listening carefully to the client. That should not be confused with simply letting someone get things off their chest. The person providing help is guided by empathy and by a wish to understand the other person. It means giving full attention and accompanying another person on the way through a difficulty. The choice of intervention depends on the kind of difficulty the client is experiencing, on their expectations regarding the therapist’s involvement and way of working, and on the professional judgement of the person providing help.
