Psychotherapy is addressed to people who have, in a sense, lost control over their own lives. This may be connected with severe anxiety, mental illness or a harmful social situation. The difficulties they live with affect many areas of their functioning and cause real suffering.
Psychotherapy involves longer and more intensive work than counselling. It is always conducted on the basis of a theoretical model, which determines the methods used. The therapeutic process involves a degree of temporary dependence of the client on the therapist. The work can at times be demanding and may cause temporary discomfort.
Here the work is more of a long-term process. Depending on the kind of difficulty and on how the process unfolds, it usually lasts at least 12 weeks. Progress is monitored periodically.
